The Museum dedicated to the sculptor Bruno Bartoccini, born in Pistrino in 1910, is one of the rare collections of modern sculpture in central Italy. Established in 2009, the museum is a real anthological collection that traces Bartoccini’s production throughout his life. The exhibition includes 36 works executed by the artist between 1940-1995 and donated to his hometown. The sculptures and bas-reliefs, mainly portraits and human bodies (dancers and female nudes) but also everyday subjects and animals, made of marble, wood, and bronze, are characterized by grace, harmony, and plasticity of movements. Bartoccini’s works differ from the artistic trends of the contemporary avant-gardes to the artist, as they recall a traditional sculpture of a classical stamp, with a formal research that deprives of anatomical details, leading to a high level of abstraction of reality.
bruno bartoccini
Sculptor and engraver, he trained at the School of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia under the guidance of Benedetto D’Amore. In 1936, he moved to Camerino where he taught drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts. The call to arms led him to Puglia where he met Giovanni Barbisan who introduced him to the art of engraving. After the war, he moved to Florence where he opened his new studio. He has been engraving since the 1960s, preferring the technique of etching on zinc plates and drypoint. The most depicted subjects are the human figure, of which he investigates the small gestures of everyday life, represented with an extremely classical style, the animal world, and still life. He has exhibited in numerous collective events and has realized various solo exhibitions.
